4 films from Greece, with love

written by EM

It’s that time of year again when the whole of Greece becomes a Babel Tower, and body language becomes the lingua franca for thousands of tourists and locals. I could just start talking of the timesI was mistaken for a tourist in my own city, but this is not a diary. So, better yet, I will list you 4 films that if you watch, I promise you, the next move will be to book your holidays to…well, Santorini probably.

1. Mamma Mia! (2008)

Sofia (Amanda Seyfried) is getting married and sees this as an opportunity to invite all three of her potential dads(Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard) to her wedding, in order to find out which one is her real, biological father. The problem is that they all accept her invitation, thinking it was their once summer love, Donna (Meryl Streep), who actually doesn’t have a clue about their visit. “Kalokairi” (meaning “Summer” in Greek) is the island of Skopelos and there our protagonists rememeber the good old times and their “good old selves” that never actually left the island. Keep your eyes on the breathtaking scenery while the Abba songs keep the beat under the hot summer sun.

2. Before Midnight (2013)

This is the third part of the Linklater trilogy, where Jesse(Ethan Hawke) and Celine(Julie Delpy) are married with twin daughters. But this doesn’t mean their relationship is away from trouble; in fact it’s closer to it than ever. As Celine says, the land is full of thousands of years of myth and tragedy, so what better place for a story to be set in than the Peloponnese, with the ancient theatre of Epidavros, and the archaeological ruins which remind them of their own.

3. Summer Lovers (1982)

Now for the cult summer movie that brought to the world “I’m so excited” by the Pointed Sisters, Summer Lovers. Michael (Peter Gallagher) and Cathy (Daryl Hannah) go on vacation to Greece after college graduation. The two of them have a good time until Lina (Valerie Quennessen) joins them; and that’s when they have a great time (wink). This awsome threesome will travel you around a number of Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos. And if you wonder what’s got them so “excited” it’s probably the ever-so-famous vibe of these two islands.

4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (1 and 2)

Four friends, Lena (Alexis Bledel), Tibby (Amber Tamblyn), Carmen (America Ferrera) and Bridget (Blake Lively) have discovered a  pair of jeans that fits all of them perfectly, something they take it as a sign of good luck. But since all of them are spending the summer in different places, in order to share the pants, the pair has to travel all over America and…Greece. Lena spends her summer in Santorini visiting her grandparents. That’s where she meets Kostas, and before she even thinks of her growing feelings for him, her grandparents forbid Lena to ever see him again because of an old feud between the two families. It’s Santorini again but, fortunately for the 16-year-old Lena, it’s just a romance between TWO people that fall in love under one of the most beautiful sunsets the country has to offer.

So, that’s all folks! Now you either come and Live Your Myth in Greece or just watch the movies lying on the couch  with the AC on. Both work for me at least.
